Rollerskating Promotional Spokes Models!

In the promo world, we have to always be on the search for innovative new ways to get a brand’s message to consumers. One of our favorite new ideas is putting our seasoned spokes models on roller skates!! Our skating spokes models head out to the beaches and urban areas to pass out flyers and drum up interest for a wide range of companies. They serve as ‘rolling advertisements,’ spreading a company’s brand message to areas not normally reached by traditional marketing.

We recently did a promotion with AEG’s Latin Department, which is a huge entertainment company that own the likes of the Staples Center and more. They approached us with the hopes of spreading the news about the CD release of a popular Spanish rock band called Manà (see more about the band here: http://www.mana.com.mx/). Our models strapped into their roller skates and headed out to the Venice Beach boardwalk and Hollywood to visit record stores that advertised the album in addition to a CD signing party. They talked to music lovers about the CD release and passed out flyers with the goal in mind to get those waiting in line, as well as the passersby pumped up and excited about the band’s album signing and upcoming concert. They were truly attention grabbers with their rolling transportation and wings on their back that matched the CD’s cover artwork!

We love to think out of the box for our street team promotions, and excited to now have our roller skating brand ambassadors working for numerous of our other clients!

Don’t Siesta, Fiesta!

Since the beginning of 2010, Sweet Deal has been proud and excited to work with a new liquor partner: Skyy Spirits!!  Skyy has a vast portfolio of new and well-known spirits, and Sweet Deal has been their staffing partner for all promotions in Southern California during 2010 and continuing into this year.  From Midori Melon Liquor to Skyy Infusions, our spokes models have fanned across the state promoting Skyy’s brands at numerous special events. 

One of the most effective and fun times of the year to promote any of Skyy’s brands is around the holidays.  We’ve promoted X-Rated Liqueur for Valentine romantics; Skyy Pineapple for July 4th barbecues; and Midori Melon for St. Patty’s parties.  But the ultimate holiday for on-premise promotions and spicy fun is Cinco De Mayo!!  Cinco de Mayo is one of the busiest days for us at Sweet Deal.  It’s when our spokes models fan out to bars across So-Cal to show bar patrons how to keep away the siesta and bring on the fiesta!!

Last year, Cabo Wabo Tequila was the star of the day when our brand ambassadors handed out a ‘shot of rock and roll’ to thousands of bar patrons.  Cabo Wabo is a smooth-tasting tequila created by the famed Van Halen rocker, Sammy Hagar.  Out at the bars, our models can be seen passing out sweet samples to partyers, playing games and giving away free goodies.  To keep with the spirit of rock and roll, our models dress up in fitting attire and don the signature Cabo Wabo cowboy hat.  Our Sweet Deal models aren’t only found at the bars; they can be seen rockin’ on stage with Sammy at his concerts, always making sure to bring out his shot of tequila with style.  Our Cabo models also serve up samples at golf tournaments, fundraisers, and in-store demos.

How to Become a Promotional Model

Are you interested in becoming a promotional spokes model?  Are you a people person, a natural charmer, a bubbly personality?  If you answered yes to any of these descriptions, then becoming a promotional spoke person might be the perfect fit for you!

As a casting agent for Sweet Deal, I’ve been asked by numerous guys and girls how to break into the promotional modeling industry.  They see photos of all our fun marketing events and wonder how they can get involved too.  I always tell them that being a promotional spokes model is perfect for people who want control of their schedule as they can take jobs as they come up.  You’ll have the opportunity to work at amazing sporting events, bar promotions, street festivals, and more!

But of course, the promotional industry isn’t for everyone.  You must be committed, reliable, unafraid of approaching strangers, and articulate in conversing with others.  Actors are perfect spokes people, but I’ve also worked with nursing students, insurance brokers and flight attendants who were just as skilled at working with people.  Above all, the ability to communicate professionally and with enthusiasm is the necessary spokes model trait.

But how and where do you start trying to get work in the event marketing world?  Begin with photos.  Every promotional agency will request to see a headshot and full length photo of you.  No glamour shots please!! Natural or candid pictures that reveal your personality are the best.  Next, put together a skill resume that best illustrates your effectiveness in working and connecting with people, as that is what promotions are all about!  If you’ve already done promotional work, make sure to list the agency you worked with, the program you worked on and the role you played.

Love for Chobani!

When we first tasted a sample of Chobani Greek Yogurt at the Natural Products West Expo in Anaheim last year, we knew we had found a new office snack favorite.  It truly is a perk of our job here at Sweet Deal to be able to scope out and sample new and tasty products on the market!  After being given a whole taste tour of their line at the Expo West, Chobani was definitely the stand out in my mind, and to this day I still make a special trip to pick some up at Whole Foods.

If you haven’t eaten it before, Chobani is a scrumptious Greek-style yogurt in an array of flavors like Vanilla, Lemon, Blueberry, and my personal favorite Black Cherry.  Unlike some other Greek yogurts out there, Chobani is all natural with 0% fat (they do have a 2% fat line if you are wanting a little more Opa!).  It also doesn’t have the same overly tart, chalky taste that Greek yogurts sometimes have.  Chobani is creamy, rich with flavor, and quite a sweet (and healthy!) treat when mixed with granola or fruit.

When we met the Chobani reps at the Expo West, they filled us in on their exciting plans for their “Cho-Mobile Tour.”  The Cho-Mobile, a 26 ft. long blue bus, tours the nation and introduces the yogurt to thousands of people during festival season.  We knew we had to get on this bus and we knew Chobani would be the perfect addition to our new division of promotional event marketing for non-alcoholic beverages and natural food products.  So, we partnered with Chobani and provided promotional staff at the ground-level of the festivals.  From Portland to Seattle, Santa Monica to San Francisco, our Chobani spokes models handed out free samples at numerous healthy living festivals, marathons, and more.  The festivals were a success in rain or shine as no one could pass up a tasty treat like Chobani!

Now, Chobani is spreading the Cho-Love even further across the nation through their “Real Chobani Love Stories” marketing campaign.  Chobani fans are encouraged to write their real-life story of their love for Chobani and submit it to win a free case of product!  If you have your own love story to tell, head on over here to include yours!

Sweet Deal Cupcake Culture

Here at Sweet Deal, we LOVE cupcakes.  It’s not a little love, an slightly emphasized love, or even an underlined love.  It’s an all-in-one huge, bold, capitalized, underlined, and italicized LOVE for cupcakes!!  Being a company called “Sweet Deal” naturally means we love sweet things, so cupcakes were an obvious mascot for our Sweet team from the very beginning.  From office birthday parties to event sponsorships and street teams, we can’t help but infuse cupcakes into our very own day-to-day Sweet happenings.

One of our first new clients in 2008 was Crumbs Bakeshop.  If you are cupcake fan at all, you most likely know about their signature “colossal” cupcakes  with scrumptious flavors like Blackbottom Cheesecake Brownie and White Hot Chocolate.  Our brand ambassadors handed out thousands of Crumbs flyers over the course of a month across the nation, spreading Crumbs brand awareness at festivals, movie theatres, malls, in Times Square and other high-traffic areas.  No one (even you reader, we know it!) can pass up a free sweet treat, so when our models offered coupons for a free Crumbs Bakeshop cupcake, people lined up inside, outside, and around the block to get a taste.

Our love of cupcakes even extends to our sponsorship division, where we connect our food and beverage clients and friends with exciting event opportunities.  By doing this, we can provide great exposure opportunites to emerging brands, and in turn offer exciting product placements for event planners! (If you’d like to hear more about getting involved with our sponsorship division—as either an event planner or product—please email us at sponsorships@sweetdealin.com).  At a special fashion event for Misis, an absolutely beautiful jewelry line from Italy, our friend Sarah Hileman from CutieCakes sponsored the event by providing hundreds of mini cupcakes.  Our models tray passed the cupcakes to jewelry customers at the special Bloomingdales’ trunk show.  By sponsoring the event, Sarah was able to expose new people to her tasty treats, and our clients with Misis were able to create a memorable event full of sweetness!

Just as our clients love to promote their cupcakes, we at the Sweet Deal office love to eat their cucpakes!  Once a month, we will break from our intense program management and have some fun with our team during our “Cupcakes & Champagne Hour.”  We invite nearby clients and spokes models to join in on the fun so we can all relax together after a long yet rewarding month of promotions and events.  Cupcakes truly are our favorite treat, and we are happy to have some great clients on board who share their sweetness with all of us!

Definition of a Sweet Deal Spokes Model : A girl or guy who is intelligent, energetic, passionate about event marketing and most of all, sweet as can be!

We are constantly on the search for fantastic new spokes models to join our Sweet Roster.  Across the nation from Chicago to San Diego and Portland, we hold castings every month to interview potential new employees.  As our business has grown from a small group of poker dealers to a nationwide promotional staffing & creative marketing agency, there is one connecting trait of all of our staff that we have maintained to this day: Sweetness.  Sweetness is the ability to genuinely connect with customers or event-goers on a personal level with pep and enthusiasm!

When we started to branch out into event marketing years back, we found that models from other promotional agencies lacked a certain spunk, a certain passion in their demeanor at events.  This isn’t to say they didn’t have the Sweetness in them, but they hadn’t been trained to bring out their best qualities within a promotional setting.  So we set out to fill the hole and create a new team who would bring their passion for life and marketing into every event they worked.  Now here we are, finding ourselves with a team of thousands of handpicked Sweets across the country!!

Our Sweet Deal models are punctual and intelligent.  They study brand facts with our project managers and make sure they know how to articulate every product message persuasively.  Our Sweet Deal models are energetic and spirited.  They know to ‘show up’ to every event, leaving the rest of their day out the door and fully committing themselves to the task at hand.  Our Sweet Deal models are experienced and professional.  They have experience in the promotional world & know how to appropriately interact with consumers, managers, and other staff members alike.

Our interview process differs from many agencies, as we hire our models as employees and do a full background and reference check before hiring them.  They meet with two or three of our representatives who get to know them fully through extensive questioning ranging from their promotional experience to their favorite hobbies.  We always put our newer or less experienced spokes models on test events to see if they are a right fit for our Sweet Team, and then asses their performance until we think they are ready to be brought on board.  Even though we’ve sat down and spoken to thousands of promotional spokes models across the country, we always strive to keep the integrity of our interview process with each individual.  We know how important this is in order to provide the best staff possible for our company and for our clients.

Demos…More Than Just a Free Sample

If you’ve kept up with Sweet Deal lately, you know that our spokes models do a lot of demos in grocery stores.  You’ve probably seen photos where they are standing near a demo table posing with different products.  But you may be wondering: what exactly is a demo?

A demo is an interactive event experience designed to spread awareness about a certain product or service.  You’ve seen a demo when you walk into Whole Foods and a brand ambassador is pouring samples of Dry Soda. You’ve seen a demo when a spokes model approaches you to let you know popchips are on sale that day and then lets you try multiple flavors so you know how scrumptious they are.  Whenever you interact with a brand ambassador within a store setting, you are part of a demo experience!!

Here at Sweet Deal, in-store demos are our business and we pride ourselves in working hand in hand with our clients to create memorable and unique demo experiences for their customers.  For instance, instead of merely having our demo models cut cheese and pass out samples, we took the demo program for Champignon Cheese a step further.  We dressed our models in authentic German dirndls and taught them German phrases (“Ich liebe Champignon!!) in order to promote Cambazola Black Label blue cheese.  The results were astounding, with our frauleins selling through multiple wheels of cheese in just a few hours.  The program was such a success that it has now expanded to 4 more cities and is continuing its tour across the country.

When we begin to create a demo program, we start with the basics: what is the product and what is the message that needs to be relayed?  We then cast the perfect spokes model for the brand and train them on product info and sales tips.  But the final touches are where we have the most fun!  We brainstorm innovative ideas on how to creatively reach customers; be it a free sample, a colorful display, an attention grabbing sign, or a contest.  Whatever it is, we stay true to the brand identity and relay the product message with pep, enthusiasm, and of course, a little sweetness! 

After the demo is done, our models record everything that occurred during their time at the store in a post-event recap.  We gather all the data in order to provide our clients with a comprehensive analysis of the event: how many people were sampled, sales numbers, customer comments, and more!  We’ve got the in-store demo down to a science here at Sweet Deal, from creation to implementation and then analysis.
